Travelling by Car & Ferry

Car and Ferry (or Channel Tunnel)

Travelling over by car is by far the most popular way to get to us. The shortest car journey is from the Ports of Caen (3hrs 46 mins, 253miles), St Malo ( 4hrs, 280 miles), or Le Havre(4 hrs 30 mins, 281 miles). For those using the Channel Tunnel into Calais the drive will be slightly longer at around 6 - 7 hours (415 miles). Also note that some routes may have tolls on major motorways.

Please note that the outward journey from Portsmouth to both St Malo and Le Havre are overnight crossings that arrive in the ports at around 8.30 am. The Caen route has both day and night crossings. All return journeys are daytime/evening crossings.

Driving in France

If you haven’t driven in France before then don’t be put off. The roads are generally devoid of other vehicles and it really doesn’t take you long to get used to driving on the ‘wrong side’.

Sat nav is definitely a benefit, but if you don’t have it then I would recommend using an AA Road atlas. The AA or RAC can give you routes to get from your chosen port to Tagne.

You should also be aware that in France you are required to carry your passport and insurance documents with you when using your car. Also you need to have other items such as a warning triangle, breathlisers, high visibility vests etc. These items can be bought in the UK as a pack at Halfords or online.
